Merchant Operating System Upgrades
We are pleased to announce the completion of a range of upgrades to the operating system used by our merchant-enabled web sites. Specifically, we have upgraded the operating system that runs your merchant store to Miva Empressa Engine 3.93 and upgraded your store (and license) to Miva Merchant 4.12. Both upgrades utilize the most current systems available. Upgrades were completed jointly by staff in Medford, NJ and Barcelona, Spain.  Our favorite enhanced functions and new features now available due to the upgrade include:
  • Product attribute templates (read the Adobe PDF);
  • More flexibility in category and product page display (PDF);
  • Real-time inventory level display so customers can see current availability (PDF );
  • Real-time UPS shipping calculator for international delivery (PDF);
  • 20-field product management database using Import Flat File (PDF).

The Spain Report
As an update to our June 20, 2002 Bulletin titled "European Connectivity Advisory", Ignasi Mas Lopez confirms what had been stated by various media outlets at the time the E-Bone / internet problems in Europe were becoming apparent.  Ignasi, Frontier !nteractive's Spain General Manager, alerted us to widespread packet loss for email and web site uses in the Barcelona, Spain areas and elsewhere in Europe as much as he could be certain from his personal experiences in May and June.  As of last week, July 5, he was reporting "...Internet connections were working as usual. No more problems."  The most alarming thing is that the sender is not aware that messages are not delivered to the recipient. No auto-reply or "undeliverable" message is returned to the email sender notifying of a problem.  The emails simply disappeared. Keep this in mind if customers in Europe and Asia say they were not able to get to your web site or that they had sent you a message during these outages in June.
New Clients: NAC Image Technology, Inc. (California) and Hoverground Studios (New York)
New Client announcements takes us coast-to-coast this issue:  Please join us in welcoming two new organizations to Frontier Interactive's group of companies to which we provide internet services.  NAC Image Technology, Inc., based in Simi Valley, California, is a world-leading seller of high-speed camera and video camera systems and accessories.  Their products astound me. For instance, the NAC Memrecam fx K3 Digital High-Speed Color Video System shoots between 1,000 and 10,000 pictures per second. 10,000 pictures in the blink of an eye!!   Frontier is providing a range of services to NAC including email and site hosting, search engine optimization with our Sponsored Links program, and technical support for their web site as their site continues to be maintained by OPM Design of California. NAC's web site URL is http://www.nacinc.com

Hoverground Studios, based in New York City, has selected Frontier Interactive for site development and site promotion through our a range of "old-school" search engine optimization techniques for Hoverground's latest film release, Operation Midnight Climax (O.M.C.). View the online press release announcing the agreement. Filmmaker Magazine was quoted as saying that these guys <OMC film directors Will Keenan and Gadi Harel> "really know how to throw a party." Operation Midnight Climax's web site URL is http://www.omc-movie.com

New Jersey Sales & Use Tax Update
Generally, if your company is based in New Jersey and your products or services are taxable items, you are required to collect sales tax on transactions shipped to or consumed within New Jersey. If you have questions about your company's sales tax collection status, check out the sales tax guide prepared by the State of New Jersey (S&U-4 New Jersey Sales Tax Guide) available online at URL: http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/  Other noteworthy items covered include:
  • Comprehensive listing of items/products commonly found in retail stores and the tax status of each item (page 3);
  • Comprehensive listing of services  and the tax status of each item (page 9);
  • Use Tax: "When taxable items are purchased from Internet retailers or mail order catalog companies that do not collect New Jersey sales tax, the purchaser is required to remit the use tax directly to the State of NJ" (page 2).
  • Note to Users of our merchant system: You can easily change the sales tax configurations product by product as well as specify which states to charge sales tax. Contact us for help.

For additional references on the state of the State of New Jersey, check Dr. Don Scarry's New Jersey Economics site at http://www.njeconomics.org Links to other business and industry things New Jersey.

Search Engine Optimization Tip:
No Minimum at Google Adwords Select?
As it approaches 150-days since it's introduction, practices and policies for advertisers on Google's Adwords Select, Google's pay-per-click system, are becoming clearer.  Is there a minimum cost for your account?  Google states NO. However, in practice, you will find that there is a minimum due to the fact that Google establishes a minimum bid amount per keyphrase based on their own determination. Therefore, YES, there is a minimum you will spend for many desirable keyphrases. For example, as we were establishing bids for NAC Image Technology, we learned in the research phase that most keyphrases that included the word "digital" had minimum per-click rates established by Google, and not the market forces ala Overture and others, of over 60-cents per click even though there was little or no competition for the keyphrases. As always, we recommend that you carefully monitor your keyphrase bids on Google Adwords Select. Members of our Sponsored Links program enjoy the benefit of daily monitoring of their keyphrase bids on all search engine databases.

There's one more reason to closely monitor your keyphrase bids on Google Adwords Select:  Google established a 0.5% click rate per 100 impressions for the first 1000 impressions which must be met or the listing will be removed from the system. In other words, if the listing fails to generate 5 click-thrus in the first 1000 impressions (times searched on Google), then the listing is de-activated. At first, you may believe that any phrase not generating 5 clicks is worthless but it's not that simple for all products and services.

This Old House: Introducing
Historic Homes of Medford Village online.
I love my little village. Our new site section lets me show you why. Historic Homes of Medford Village is a pictoral tour of our favorite historic houses in and around Medford Village built between 1787 and 1900.  Site section homepage is http://www.frontieria.com/html/medford.html and contains thumbnail and large size images of some of our personal favs. Starting with a handful of homes within a block or two of our Medford office, we plan to extend out to historic homes in surrounding Medford and Burlington County.

Historic Homes of Medford Village will be available for purchase as a custom-content module which we can install on the purchaser's site or provide on CD-ROM and it represents an example of our custom-content web development capabilities (and a fun visual thing to do).

Pretzel Logic:
Who or What Killed Andy Warhol?
Its been fifteen years since Andy Warhol's death, so we are devoting this edition's Pretzel Logic to a contest regarding Andy Warhol.  Before you read further, take a hard look at this image taken at the cemetary in Pittsburgh where Andy Warhol is buried. Ignore me: there is a lot going on in this image. Bob Kudzma took this picture of while I was visiting during July 2002. He lives in Castle Shannon, south of Pittsburgh, a mile from this cemetary. About the pic: Notice the second Warhol stone behind me, it's the gravestone Andy Warhol's parents. More: Have you ever seen such a nicely landscaped grave? (Especially considering the rest of the cemetary is a barren grassy hillside). Lastly, that is bird droppings on Wahol's grave stone, above Warhol's name.

Answer & Win a $25.00 Gift Certificate to Woodstock Trading Company Online: Do you remember what Andy Warhol died from?  Was it murder?   Submit your answer using the Contact Form at the top of this page. One correct entry will be randomly picked from among all correct entries submitted by midnight July 23, 2002.

And for those who care, visit the Andy Warhol Museum online.  The Warhol store is a must-visit site.
